Background of the study
Digital language change in Nigeria is vividly manifested on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, where diverse linguistic practices converge to create innovative language forms. On Facebook, extended posts, comments, and discussions facilitate in-depth expression that often blends formal language with regional dialects, leading to gradual language change. Instagram, with its visual focus and concise captions, encourages rapid, creative modifications in language that reflect current trends and cultural shifts (Okeke, 2023). The comparative analysis of these platforms provides a unique opportunity to examine how different digital environments foster distinct language change processes. Nigerian users employ neologisms, codemixing, and syntactic innovations that mirror societal transformations influenced by globalization and digital connectivity. This study seeks to document these changes by analyzing user-generated content on both platforms, exploring how digital language change is shaped by visual aesthetics, audience interaction, and technological constraints. The research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of language evolution in Nigerian social media, highlighting the interplay between traditional language forms and digital innovation (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although digital language change is apparent on both Facebook and Instagram in Nigeria, few comparative studies have explored how each platform uniquely influences linguistic evolution. Most existing research focuses on individual platforms, ignoring the varying effects of content format and audience engagement on language change. This gap restricts our understanding of the processes driving digital lexical and syntactic innovation. Therefore, a comparative analysis is needed to elucidate the differences and similarities in language change on Facebook and Instagram, shedding light on the broader dynamics of digital communication in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant because it provides a comparative perspective on digital language change in Nigeria, enhancing our understanding of how different social media platforms contribute to linguistic innovation. The findings will inform digital communication strategies and sociolinguistic theory, offering practical insights for educators and media professionals (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on text-based content from Facebook and Instagram in Nigerian digital discourse and excludes other platforms and offline communication.
